Character Interview + {GIVEAWAY!}: Eros, from Destined

Destined by Jessie Harrell
Pages: 260
Publisher: Mae Day Publishing
Genre: YA Mythology

When Psyche receives a prophecy gone horribly wrong, she learns that even the most beautiful girl in Greece can have a hideous future. Her fate? Fall in love with the one creature even the gods fear.

As she feels herself slipping closer into the arms of the prophecy, Psyche must choose between the terrifyingly tender touch she feels almost powerless to resist and the one constant she's come to expect out of life: you cannot escape what is destined.

Today I have with me Eros, the Greek God of Love from Destined by Jessie Harrell. Hey there Eros! [He winks at you.] I’ll be interviewing him, and I’m very excited!

So, tell us, what’s a day in the life of the God of Love like? Actually, let me clarify that. What was a day in your life like before you met Psyche?

Good thing you clarified. The answers are pretty different. Hmmm... [runs hand through his golden curls] those were some dark days. I think you know I had my heart broken way back when. After that, I'd spend a typical day sleeping off my hangover, answering a few prayers, and then finding a party to crash somewhere. [shrugs] Not my best days.

And how much has changed now that the two of you are together?

Everything has changed. Psyche is my reason for getting up in the morning. The inspiration behind the prayers I answer. Honestly, Ashley, it's like the time before Psyche was a bad dream and I've finally woken up. She makes me clear, if that makes any sense.

Speaking of Psyche, name three traits about her that you love. (She’s probably reading this, so make them good!)

Her stubborn streak is adorable and makes me laugh. She's got the biggest heart of anyone I've ever met. And she's incredibly modest, despite being the best looking immortal on Olympus.

Do you like being the god of love? Have you ever wanted to have a different power?

That's a funny question. I guess maybe as a kid I wished I could trade my arrows for Zeus' lightening bolts. I'm sure I could find some people who deserve to get knocked out. [laughs at himself] But manipulating love is all I've ever known. Of course, Psyche makes loving my job a whole lot easier.

Has there ever been a moment in your life that you wanted to go back and change? What was it? (Oh yes, I’m delving deep, haha)

Of course. So many things happened just in Destined that I'd change if I could. [rubs his chin] I don't want to spoil anything for those who don't know the story, but let's just say there's a certain palace I wish I hadn't destroyed, and a certain goddess I wouldn't have let distract me (more than once) if I could do it over again. You know, both those things come down to making Psyche safer. I'd take back everything I ever did that put her in harms way. Except loving her. I know that itself was a risk, but I'd never change that.

What was life like growing up with Aphrodite as a mother? She can be a bit… um… abrasive, to put it lightly.

[smiles wryly] Now, it sounds like you're trying to get me in trouble with my mother. You have to understand, she's not only a goddess, but the most beautiful goddess on Olympus (at least she was before Psyche got here). And she knew how to use that beauty to get what she wanted. So it's not like you can blame her that much for getting pissy when she doesn't get what she wants. She doesn't really know any better.
That being said, as a kid, I just learned to keep my head down and follow directions. She is the goddess of Love, and was an amazingly warm mother as long as I stayed on her good side.

Did you ever have any doubts that you could make Psyche fall in love with you when all she saw was a dark shadow?

Not as many as Hermes, but yeah, the thought crossed my find. I didn't have any other options though. Well, except for the arrows. But as you know, I didn't think that'd be fair to Psyche.

Those arrows of your are risky business! Has there ever been a time that you used them on someone, and the ensuing romance turned out terribly wrong?

[sits back in his chair to think. then laughs.] More than once, actually. I think you read about the time I had Apollo so hard up for Daphne that her father had to turn her into a laurel tree so she could get away from him. He's still bitter about that one, by the way. And then there's the time I shot Zeus and he was so pissed he sent me into exile for six weeks. I talk about that one a bit in Before. [Editorial note -- Before is a short story in the In His Eyes anthology.] And yeah, early on I granted some prayers but my timing was off. Like when I hit Narcissus before he looked at his own reflection instead of before his lover arrived at the lake... that didn't end so hot either.

Thank you so much Eros for joining me today! I’m so glad I had the opportunity to talk to you!

You're very welcome, Ashley. It's been a delight. Remember who to say a prayer to if you ever need a little extra help in the love department.

  1. Well, I'd probably freak out, because I'm addicted to Grrek Myths and finding out they were true would be both terrifying and amazing!

  2. If the God of love fell in love with me, wow, I'm not sure what I'd do. It depends, does he look like Dwayne Johnson?! LOL! I'd celebrate!

  8. I would be surprised at first since the god of love could have anyone and he chose me of all people. Then, I'd be very flattered by him choosing me.

  9. If the god of love chose me I'd be quite skeptical at first. If he proved to be true blue then that skepticism would turn into elation!

  10. I'd be worried. That can't be safe to have a Goddess on your case. Mortal women are dangerous enough for me.

  18. I'd be second guessing everything. Wondering if it were all just a big joke to make me look foolish. It would take a lot of convincing before I believed it had actually happened.

  19. I would probably be wondering what the catch was ... i mean if a god or goddess of love falls in love with you, there's gotta be a "but..." included in there somewhere. But if i was proved wrong i would embrace it.

  20. I would probably freak out because I would be afraid of what they would do to me if I didn't return their love

  21. I would be quite frightened if the god of love fell in love with me b/c things turn out really bad for the mortal in those situations in pretty much all of the mythologies I've read.

  22. I would probably panic. What would that mean for me? Will I still be able to live the life I want? I get nervous about regular human relationship already lol
