My Story/Desi's Story
by Ali Cross

It's both embarrassing and awesome, but it's no secret that authors often write themselves into their stories. I mean, how can they not? The people on the page first come to life in our minds; some of us is bound to rub off on them.

So when I tell you my story, it's Desi's.

And when I tell you Desi's story, I'm telling secrets from my own life.

Desi, the main character in my series, DESOLATION, hates her name. (Would you like to have the name Desolation? Um, probably not.) I didn't like my birth name either, so I changed it.

Desi thinks everything would be better if James would kiss her, hold her . . . anything to help her feel something, or to take all feeling away. I was a girl who didn't feel whole unless I had a steady boyfriend. I was the girl who was willing to do pretty much anything if it meant the boy would stay with me one more day.

But when Desi finds love--real love--she thinks there's no way she's worthy of it. So she does everything she can to push her true love away. I tried to do that too. Except Desi's Michael, and my David, would not be pushed away.

And both Deis and I are so glad they are stronger than we are.

Sure, I'm not the devil's daughter, and Desi's a lot stronger than me--but she is me, and I am her.

Desi's story is mine.
