Movie Magic.

Well, the HP movie was bloody amazing, which is to be expected, because, well.... it's Harry Potter. I think the HP movies are the only ones that can pull off being almost 3 hours long and not have anyone be annoyed. I know I wasn't. But I got home around 3 in the morning, and had to wake pretty early, so I'm very tired. Must.... sleeeeep......

Also, I've gotten wind that a SWOON (Nina Malkin) sequel might be in the works. But, this will only happen if its sales are through the roof. So I encourage anyone who hasn't read it to GO OUT AND BUY IT. It is an amazing book, and well worth the money.

Always with yawns and wands,
Lolli

P.S. My next review SHOULD be posted by the end of today, but if not, than by tomorrow.

Harry, harry, quite contrary.

Hello Sweets!

I am just dropping in to say hello!! and to see who else is going to the Harry Potter premiere. I'm so excited, and my good friend and I are going together so it will be wickedly sweet. And, best of all, I am wearing a real corset! And it is laced VERY TIGHTY and I am having trouble breathing so don't be alarmed if you see I am squirming on the floor, limbs flailing, and gasping for air. And if my internal organs all rearrange, that's fine too. As long as I get to live in my Victorian-inspired glory. Laaa! I am in rapture.

(Word to all my fellow corset wearing ladies: DO NOT EAT!)

must go!

Author Interview: Beth Fantaskey

Beth Fantaskey, author of JESSICA'S GUIDE TO DATING ON THE DARK SIDE (see review in post below) has been kind enough to answer a few questions for me. So, without further ado, my interview with her:
1. What was your inspiration for Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side?
BETH: The book was inspired by my experiences as a parent. My kids are both adopted from China, so their birth parents are a complete mystery. Sometimes we wonder, "What were they like?" I took those imaginings to the extreme by having Jess's birth parents revealed as vampire royalty. The rest of the story flowed from that...
2. Why vampires?

BETH: I think vampires are intriguing because they are so close to "normal" humans (although are there any of those really?) that it sometimes seems vampires could possibly exist. I wanted Jess's birth parents - and Lucius - to rock her very rational world - and yet still be within the realm of the possible for readers. That's why I changed some of the conventional thinking about vampires, to make it easier for Lucius to be part of the "regular" world.
3. Did you always want to be a writer?
BETH: That's actually a tough question! I sort of drifted into a career as a writer because it was something I was good at. I didn't have a conscious, burning desire. However, I remember getting my first job out of college, as a political speechwriter, and when my first paycheck arrived, it struck me, "Wow... I'm a writer. That's what I do." I was very proud. Since that moment, that's what I've been, either in public relations or as a journalist and now as a novelist. I would say my love of writing has actually grown over the years.
4. Is Jessica based off you, or anyone you know in any way?
BETH: No, Jess isn't really based on anyone. She does share my sister's very rational bent, but that's all.
5. Who is Lucius based off of? (I must say, he was my favorite character)
BETH: Lucius is REALLY his own person. I don't know anyone like him. (Although I wish I did!) The first time I sat down to write one of his letters, he just sprang to life. I'm glad you like him, too!
6. Do you plan on continuing your writing career? What can you tell us about future books?
BETH: Right now I'm putting the finishing touches on my next novel, Jekel Loves Hyde, as that gets ready to go into production. It's the story of two teenagers who discover they share a mysterious, possibly deadly, connection to the old Jekyll/Hyde novel. As they unravel the mystery, they become closer - and more dangerous - to one another. Beyond that, it's too soon to share anything... I am always very cautious about making promises or predictions. I think it's my superstitious side!
Thanks so much Beth for you interview, and I look forward to reading more of your books!

Just Another Manic.... Friday.

Heylo my chickee-poos! I'm so unnecessarily excited to say that I have already posted 5 reviews! FIVE! Yeah, I know, that's peanuts to the big dogs like The Story Siren (LURVE her blog... amazing) but it's something for lil ol' me who is so new to this realm of infinite joy. I mean, thousands of people talking about books. BOOKS! I'm in love.

Anyway, I just wanted to wish people a happy second half of the summer. Can you believe it's already almost over? Gosh, I want to break down into sobs.

I also want to thank anyone who reads my blog! I know I'm not that exciting, even if I do wear a tiara to school and design and make my own clothes and ramble on about nothing and such. I am horribly dull. Thank you for bearing me.

With hearts and huggles,
Lollipop

Vampire Kisses Review

Author: Ellen Schreiber

Pages: 253

Publisher: HarperTrophy (July 26, 2005)

When other girls wanted to be princesses or ballerinas, Raven wanted to be a night-walking bloodsucker…

A vampire.

Raven lives in “Dullsville” where nothing ever happens…Until now.

The mansion on top of Benson Hill has been empty and boarded up for years. But a new family has moved in. A family that never ventures out during the day. Who are these creepy people—especially the handsome, dark, and elusive Alexander Sterling? Or rather, what are they? Could the town gossip possibly be true? Are they vampires?

Raven, who secretly covets a vampire kiss, both at the risk of her own mortality and Alexander’s loving trust, is dying to uncover the truth.

In this light, enjoyable read, Ellen Schreiber reinvents the classic vampire in Alexander. He can’t go out in the sunlight, he has an aversion to garlic, and he has no reflection. But he is also almost human in the way he acts towards Raven, and in his emotions. He’s an extremely talented artist with soulful black eyes and a loving, almost vulnerable air to him. Much different than your average “Edward Cullen” vampire.

This book is full of cookie-cutter stereotypes. You have your meek best friend/sidekick; the popular jock who acts snarky and rude, but secretly is in love with the protagonist; creepy butler who looks almost skeletal and has a name like Jameson; and of course your typical Goth Girl—combat boots, an affinity for black, and a love of vampires. She immediately falls for her “Gothic Guy” (did NOT see that one coming) and he is smitten with her as well.

But for all is predictability, I enjoyed this book more than most of the others in its genre. It was funny and just an all around amazing read. 5 stars.
