Author Guest Post + {GIVEAWAY!}: Ramona Wray

I read, write (and sometimes even breathe) YA fiction and my own contribution to the genre comes in a blend of romance, paranormal, and thriller. My first published novel, Hex, a witch & angel tale, is both a supernatural romance and a mystery.

On writing and being a writer
by Ramona Wray

I’ve got to be honest: one of my least favorite questions, ever, is did I always know I wanted to be a writer. Why don’t I like it? Every time someone asks me that, I have to stop for a second and wonder if my interlocutor is in fact poking fun at me; he, or she, may be uttering, “Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?” … but this is what I hear.

1.     Did you always like to lock yourself in a room with a group of imaginary characters instead of spending time in the company of actual people? (Incidentally, the answer is YES. Even as a child reading and writing trumped real life for me.)

2.     Ruining your eyesight before 35, was this your plan all along? (Um, no. It kind of just happened. I think of my glasses as the love child of my eyes and my laptop.)

3.      Are you a glutton for punishment? By choosing to be a writer, you chose to do something that can, and will, be forever scrutinized and critiqued by … well, a whole bunch of strangers. Some of whom will punch holes in your gut (heart, pride, and all) the size of the Sea of Tranquility. Also, did I mention the unavoidable series of rejections that will, without a doubt, become something of a background noise in your life…? I mean, did you always want that? (Um… No comment?)

Bottom line? Like any profession, choosing to write for a living is no walk in the park. And if you think it’s what you might want to do, you had better prepare yourself for a long, bumpy ride. Pray for stubbornness, stamina, and a whole lot of luck. Become friends with an eye doctor. And thank God — because if you’re seriously looking at writing as a career choice, in all likelihood you were born with a bit of talent, the passion to pursue it, and more importantly, the chance to spend your life doing EXACTLY what you love. And do you have any idea how rare that is?

I don’t know about choosing this while I was still in diapers, but I do know that I ended up doing what I love. And I wouldn’t change a thing. (Holes in my gut and all…)

Genre: YA Paranormal

Like most girls at Rosemound High School, seventeen-year-old Lily Crane is acutely aware of Ryder Kingscott. Hands down the cutest guy in school, Ryder is cool, mysterious, and utterly untouchable…especially for Lily. For when she touches someone, Lily instantly learns all about their lives. And while such a skill might seem nifty, in truth it is wrecking Lily’s life.

So she is shocked when Ryder asks her out — and even more shocked to discover he has a rival. Lucian Bell is the gorgeous new kid who can’t take his eyes off of Lily. Being pursued by two hotties should make a girl happy, but Lily is skeptical. The boys act as if they’ve met before, hating each other with a passion that could only be rooted in a dark, dangerous past. A past full of terrible secrets. The kind of secrets that could get a girl killed.

  3. I agree that if you have talent and passion, then you should go for the career. It is definitely hard to find something that is work and at the same time is something you love doing. I definitely appreciate all the writers out there who stuck with it, or there wouldn't be such great books in the world to read. Reading is a great way to pass time, even if it's not in the real world.

  8. Funny post! I would hate being asked that question too if I were a writer, just b/c I know I would be asked it all the time. It would get tiring answering it.

Thanks for the giveaway! I've been wanting to read this book for a while.
