Character Interview + {GIVEAWAY!}: Julia from The Emerald Talisman

The Emerald Talisman by Brenda Pandos
Pages: 290
Genre: YA Paranormal

Buy It: Amazon | Barnes and Noble

To be normal, sixteen-year-old Julia Parker would shed her empathic gift in a second. Life has been difficult since her mother's mysterious disappearance ten years earlier - an event she witnessed, but can't remember. Julia's situation becomes more complicated after a near death experience from a blood thirsty stalker. As high school students go missing it is clear there is a connection to her own experience--past and present. Someone has to stop the madness and a chance encounter with a creepy psychic foretells that only Julia is the key to stopping the madness, but it may require the life of the one she loves.
Hey Julia! I’m so glad you can join me on my blog today! Okay, here are my questions.

Thanks so much for having me. I’m super nervous… and so are you? Why are you nervous?

1. With your ability to read people’s emotions, what’s it like to be inside your head? Do you ever have trouble discerning your own feelings from someone else’s?

It was absolutely horrible! For the longest time, I had no control. But someone helped me figure out things, and after I got the hang of it, I could turn it off. I don’t want to tell too much because I don’t want to ruin the story, but it’s so much easier being a teen when you can just feel your own stuff, you know?

2. If you were to leave this earth right now, would you have any regrets? Anything you wish you could have done differently?

Of course I do. I constantly second guess myself, my decisions, what I should have said, or shouldn’t. There’s not one big regret that I have that I’d change, but if I could do it again, I would have been more honest—with myself and the people I care about.

3. You and Nicholas had a sort of instant connection. Why do you think that is?

Well, because of what happened when I was a kid, how he was there. I knew him, though I didn’t remember that I did. How could I? And that he knew me pretty much inside and out … and since I could feel his confidence, it was … different, freeing. There’s nothing like a being around a guy that’s sure of himself, but not cocky. I like who I am and how I feel when I’m with him … he brings out the best in me and gives me that extra self assurance.

4. How has your life changed since Nicholas became a part of it?

It’s so awesome. He’s incredible. I never knew life and love could be like this, I mean we do have to watch our backs all the time, but he’s the best. He completes me.

5. What is your favorite trait about yourself?

Um… I don’t know. I guess maybe because of my empathy I get people. They can act all tough, but I know what they feel, so everything is transparent. And those people who are hurting the most put up the biggest front. It’s so sad. I wish I could help them with their self-esteem issues and tell him that everyone feels just like they do, but I can’t. High school is rough and everyone is trying so hard, too hard even, to fit in, and they compromise themselves and take risks. They need to be themselves and find people who value them for who they are and ignore the rest. Like the saying goes “hurting people, hurt people.” Just remember that.

6. Your least favorite?

That I’m so emotional. I wish I didn’t cry over everything… it’s so embarrassing.

7. Lastly, imagine for a moment that everything is completely, 100% right with the world, and you’re in a moment of utter bliss. Where are you, who is there with you, and what’s it like?

I’m with Nicholas and we are together forever, there are no such thing as vampires but he gets to keep his cool super powers, and my mom’s alive. One can dream, right? That would be bliss for me.

Author Interview + {GIVEAWAY!}: Susan Hatler

Susan Hatler

SUSAN HATLER writes humorous and emotional contemporary romance and young adult novels. A natural optimist, she believes life is amazing, people are fascinating, and imagination is endless. She loves spending time with her characters and hopes you do, too. You can visit her website at www.susanhatler.com

Hello Susan! I’m so glad to be interviewing you today! Welcome to my blog! All right, let’s get down to the questions.

Hi Ashley! Happy to be here. :)

1. In addition to your YA novels, you’ve also written adult. Is there a difference in writing for the two? Which do you prefer?
Yes, there's definitely a difference in writing for teens versus adults. I love how teen stories have a lot of first experiences, which makes everything more exciting. But love can be transient and teens are usually finding perfect-for-right-now. When writing for adults, I’m an absolute sucker for Happily Ever After love. HEAs give me the warm fuzzies. Both genres rock in different ways. My preference depends on my mood.

2. Do you listen to music while you write? If you do, are there any particular artists or bands that you listen to the most? Why?
Not always. Music can distract me. For example, if I’m writing an intense scene and some happy party song comes on that can throw the mood. But, there are certain songs that remind me of characters for sure. Whenever I hear Collide by Howie Day, I think of Kylie and Trip from my teen novel Shaken. Melts my heart every single time.

3. Which one of your characters do you identify with, and why?
Probably Amy Love in See Me. She lives with what suits her mood at the time and I can definitely be like that. Long term planning’s not really her gig. She’s more interested in trying to understand whatever’s going on in the moment. Whether it’s her parents’ latest blowout or a first date with the guy she’s been crushing on. She’s vivacious. I love that about her.

4. Why did you decide to become an author?
There's so much I love about being an author, I could write a book on that topic alone. Creating a story is delving into someone's life in the most intimate way because I'm typing out their journey through their eyes and thinking their thoughts with them. I feel their tragedies and triumphs as if they were my own and by the end of the novel, the characters are beloved friends I cherish. Fiction's not supposed to be real but in a lot of ways it is. Haven't you laughed or cried while deep into a novel? The feelings are real. I think the emotional pull's the best part of writing. And of reading for that matter.

Fun questions!
5. How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?
I’m the kind of girl who bites right into it. Whether it's chomping into a tootsie pop to get to the center or paying hardback prices for the 2nd and 3rd books in the Hunger Games trilogy. When I want something, I have to have it. Now. Patience is not my m.o.

6. You’re trapped in a cave with only 3 things to keep you entertained. What are they?
Bat repellent would be #1. That would be to keep the surrounding entertainment away from me because...eeeek! #2 would have to be my laptop because she and I can't part for any length of time. #3 I'd require back-to-back episodes of The Vampire Diaries. Veronica Blade has been all over me to watch them and I've never seen an episode (shhh, don't tell anyone!).

Fun questions, Ashley. Thanks so much for having me on your rockin' blog. TTYL and happy reading!

Is There Really a Villain Here?
By Annie Oldham

I don't know how many of you, dear readers, have read anything about the wild 'n' crazy self-publishing movement going on. Self publishing has been going on for years, but it hasn't been until a few authors earned fame and fortune (Amanda Hocking, anyone?) through self publishing that your neighbor and their cat and their goldfish decided to jump on this bandwagon and try their hand at writing a book. And it helps that there are so many easy ways to do it.

With the ease of self-publishing, people (too many people, in my opinion) are questioning the value of publishing houses. This coming from the perspective of a self-published author, and I can't bring myself to play the publishing-house-hating game. It's just not fair.

Here's a list of some gripes against publishing houses:
  • They offer small royalties
  • They pay itty-bitty advances
  • They retain rights to your work for a long while (relatively) so you can't do anything with it
  • It can take upward of a year and a half or more to see your book in print once it's been accepted
  • The competition is brutal to get anything published

These are all true. But here's the part that most people don't talk about:

Publishing is a business.

They're not in the market to sift through the masses of queries (which is why hardly any publishing house accepts unsolicited manuscripts these days); they're in the market to sell books. Publishing houses aren't sitting at their desks tapping their fingers together a la Mr. Burns and saying “We shall refuse new, extraordinary talent. We will offer authors the least possible royalties so we can swim in riches. Bwa ha ha!”

Publishers have to think about what will be the next best seller (even though you may think it's drivel). They have to carefully question how big of an advance they can pay because the simple fact is that most authors don't sell enough books to even cover their advances. They have to schedule out the releases of books to fit their production timeline.

Publishing is a business, and sad but true, they have to remember their bottom line. Not very romantic, but very practical.

So I frankly get tired when authors who have failed to get published traditionally (or if they have, had their romantic notions dashed) go on a tirade about this, saying that publishing houses are crooked, or out of touch, or greedy, or whatever other unkind thing comes out. Publishing houses aren't. They're just trying to stay afloat when the world of publishing is seriously changing.

Because here's a fact: very few traditionally published books go on to become best sellers just the way very few self-published books go on to become best sellers.

And so, with that sobering truth, ask yourself what your goal is. If your goal is a book deal with a big six publisher, then go for it, all the way. But if your goal is simply to be published, to have your book out there, why not try the alternative: self-publishing. Instead of complaining that so-and-so agent rejected you and so-and-so of the big six publishing houses offered you that piddly little advance, self publish.

Because regardless of how you chose to publish, writing is work. There is writing and rewriting and editing and aggravation and frustration and self doubt no matter what venue you go. And at the end of the day, if you've created the best story you can, there will be people hungry to read it.

I adore writing and reading YA novels. I grew up with an insatiable desire to read and then came the insatiable desire to write. I've been blessed to have both of those in my life.

Away from my writing, I'm the mother of the two most adorable girls in the world, I have the best husband in the world, and I live in the hottest place in the world (not really, but Phoenix sure feels like it). I love to cook, sing, and play the piano.

Character Interview + {GIVEAWAY!}: Eros, from Destined

Destined by Jessie Harrell
Pages: 260
Publisher: Mae Day Publishing
Genre: YA Mythology

When Psyche receives a prophecy gone horribly wrong, she learns that even the most beautiful girl in Greece can have a hideous future. Her fate? Fall in love with the one creature even the gods fear.

As she feels herself slipping closer into the arms of the prophecy, Psyche must choose between the terrifyingly tender touch she feels almost powerless to resist and the one constant she's come to expect out of life: you cannot escape what is destined.

Today I have with me Eros, the Greek God of Love from Destined by Jessie Harrell. Hey there Eros! [He winks at you.] I’ll be interviewing him, and I’m very excited!

So, tell us, what’s a day in the life of the God of Love like? Actually, let me clarify that. What was a day in your life like before you met Psyche?

Good thing you clarified. The answers are pretty different. Hmmm... [runs hand through his golden curls] those were some dark days. I think you know I had my heart broken way back when. After that, I'd spend a typical day sleeping off my hangover, answering a few prayers, and then finding a party to crash somewhere. [shrugs] Not my best days.

And how much has changed now that the two of you are together?

Everything has changed. Psyche is my reason for getting up in the morning. The inspiration behind the prayers I answer. Honestly, Ashley, it's like the time before Psyche was a bad dream and I've finally woken up. She makes me clear, if that makes any sense.

Speaking of Psyche, name three traits about her that you love. (She’s probably reading this, so make them good!)

Her stubborn streak is adorable and makes me laugh. She's got the biggest heart of anyone I've ever met. And she's incredibly modest, despite being the best looking immortal on Olympus.

Do you like being the god of love? Have you ever wanted to have a different power?

That's a funny question. I guess maybe as a kid I wished I could trade my arrows for Zeus' lightening bolts. I'm sure I could find some people who deserve to get knocked out. [laughs at himself] But manipulating love is all I've ever known. Of course, Psyche makes loving my job a whole lot easier.

Has there ever been a moment in your life that you wanted to go back and change? What was it? (Oh yes, I’m delving deep, haha)

Of course. So many things happened just in Destined that I'd change if I could. [rubs his chin] I don't want to spoil anything for those who don't know the story, but let's just say there's a certain palace I wish I hadn't destroyed, and a certain goddess I wouldn't have let distract me (more than once) if I could do it over again. You know, both those things come down to making Psyche safer. I'd take back everything I ever did that put her in harms way. Except loving her. I know that itself was a risk, but I'd never change that.

What was life like growing up with Aphrodite as a mother? She can be a bit… um… abrasive, to put it lightly.

[smiles wryly] Now, it sounds like you're trying to get me in trouble with my mother. You have to understand, she's not only a goddess, but the most beautiful goddess on Olympus (at least she was before Psyche got here). And she knew how to use that beauty to get what she wanted. So it's not like you can blame her that much for getting pissy when she doesn't get what she wants. She doesn't really know any better.
That being said, as a kid, I just learned to keep my head down and follow directions. She is the goddess of Love, and was an amazingly warm mother as long as I stayed on her good side.

Did you ever have any doubts that you could make Psyche fall in love with you when all she saw was a dark shadow?

Not as many as Hermes, but yeah, the thought crossed my find. I didn't have any other options though. Well, except for the arrows. But as you know, I didn't think that'd be fair to Psyche.

Those arrows of your are risky business! Has there ever been a time that you used them on someone, and the ensuing romance turned out terribly wrong?

[sits back in his chair to think. then laughs.] More than once, actually. I think you read about the time I had Apollo so hard up for Daphne that her father had to turn her into a laurel tree so she could get away from him. He's still bitter about that one, by the way. And then there's the time I shot Zeus and he was so pissed he sent me into exile for six weeks. I talk about that one a bit in Before. [Editorial note -- Before is a short story in the In His Eyes anthology.] And yeah, early on I granted some prayers but my timing was off. Like when I hit Narcissus before he looked at his own reflection instead of before his lover arrived at the lake... that didn't end so hot either.

Thank you so much Eros for joining me today! I’m so glad I had the opportunity to talk to you!

You're very welcome, Ashley. It's been a delight. Remember who to say a prayer to if you ever need a little extra help in the love department.

Character Interview + {GIVEAWAY!}: Tessa & Hayden from Something Witchy This Way Comes

Something Witchy This Way Comes by Veronica Blade
Pages: 394
Publisher: Crushed Publishing
Genre: YA Paranormal
BUY IT: Amazon | Barnes and Noble

Brainiac Tessa McClean’s newly discovered magical powers give her hope of an escape from her inadequate life. But the thrill of being a witch fades when she learns of a rival coven and begins to suspect her own coven’s objective. Evidence tells Tessa to trust one side, but instinct drives her toward the other. When Hayden Anders, the most delinquent kid in school — and the toughest — offers self-defense lessons in exchange for tutoring, the timing couldn’t be better. Though the idea of hanging out with a bad-boy that tempting is unnerving, staying alive amidst warring witches takes priority. She vows to hold onto her values and not surrender to the bad-boy she begins to secretly want. Together, Tessa and Hayden uncover the truth about the two factions — a truth that explains why the covens will stop at nothing to lure her to their side. Tessa has only a matter of weeks to form an alliance with one coven or the other, but the wrong decision could cost Tessa the lives of all those she loves — including Hayden.
Okay, so I’m here today with the two main characters from Something Witchy This Way Comes: Tessa and Hayden. Before I begin, I just want to say, um, Hayden, um…. I LOVE YOU. *ahem* *coughs* MARRY ME! :D

Anyway, we’re going to play a game of This Or That.

Basically, I’m going to list two things, and you have to pick what you think fits the other person best. So, Tessa would pick what fits Hayden better, and Hayden would pick what fits Tessa better. And you have to explain why. This is a test of how well you really know each other. ;)

Chocolate or nutella?
Tessa: Beer. Oh, wait, that’s not one of the choices. I don’t think Hayden even knows what nutella is. I’m going with chocolate.
Hayden: Uh, yeah, what’s nutella? I guess chocolate wins by default.

Physically attractive or fantastic personality?
Tessa: He’s totally hot. Obviously. But so’s Chait. Hayden’s much sexier though, because when he’s doing things that get his hands dirty, he’s doing those things for ME.
Hayden: Physically attractive. Ouch, Tessa, let me finish! If you weren’t so hot, I wouldn’t have stuck around to see how amazing you are.
Tessa: Aaaw.

Bubble bath or long hot shower?
Tessa: For Hayden? I think it would depend who was in the water with him.
Hayden: Bubble bath for Tessa. Definitely.

Being stuck on a deserted island with each other, or living a rich life separated?
Tessa: He’s already rich, so… I think he’d choose the deserted island with me.
Hayden: She’d definitely choose me. She’s loyal. Ow, Tessa, your elbow doesn’t have much padding.
Tessa: That’s not flattering. Dogs are loyal.
Hayden: But I’m loyal.
Tessa: Exactly.

The glass half-empty, or the glass half-full?
Tessa: It depends… for Hayden, I’d say it’s half full and half empty.
Hayden: Tessa, you can only choose one of them.
Tessa: Fine. Half full.
Hayden: Tessa’s definitely a half full girl.

Kissing or cuddling?
Tessa: He’d go for kissing, absolutely.
Hayden: She’s not as nice as you think. She goes for the kissing, especially when I— Ouch, Tessa. I’m just trying to answer the question.
Tessa: They don’t need to know every detail, Hayden.
Hayden: I think we both know that wasn’t everything.
Tessa: Uh…

Comfy pajamas, or sleeping in the nude? (*winks at Hayden*)
Tessa: Ashley, he totally sleeps in the buff.
Hayden: Tessa starts off in PJs (wink)

CDs or iPod?
Tessa: Neither. Hayden makes his own music.
Hayden: Yeah, but only with her.

Author Guest Post + {GIVEAWAY!}: Ramona Wray

Ramona Wray
TwitterBlogWebsite

I read, write (and sometimes even breathe) YA fiction and my own contribution to the genre comes in a blend of romance, paranormal, and thriller. My first published novel, Hex, a witch & angel tale, is both a supernatural romance and a mystery.

On writing and being a writer
by Ramona Wray

I’ve got to be honest: one of my least favorite questions, ever, is did I always know I wanted to be a writer. Why don’t I like it? Every time someone asks me that, I have to stop for a second and wonder if my interlocutor is in fact poking fun at me; he, or she, may be uttering, “Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?” … but this is what I hear.

1.     Did you always like to lock yourself in a room with a group of imaginary characters instead of spending time in the company of actual people? (Incidentally, the answer is YES. Even as a child reading and writing trumped real life for me.)

2.     Ruining your eyesight before 35, was this your plan all along? (Um, no. It kind of just happened. I think of my glasses as the love child of my eyes and my laptop.)

3.      Are you a glutton for punishment? By choosing to be a writer, you chose to do something that can, and will, be forever scrutinized and critiqued by … well, a whole bunch of strangers. Some of whom will punch holes in your gut (heart, pride, and all) the size of the Sea of Tranquility. Also, did I mention the unavoidable series of rejections that will, without a doubt, become something of a background noise in your life…? I mean, did you always want that? (Um… No comment?)

Bottom line? Like any profession, choosing to write for a living is no walk in the park. And if you think it’s what you might want to do, you had better prepare yourself for a long, bumpy ride. Pray for stubbornness, stamina, and a whole lot of luck. Become friends with an eye doctor. And thank God — because if you’re seriously looking at writing as a career choice, in all likelihood you were born with a bit of talent, the passion to pursue it, and more importantly, the chance to spend your life doing EXACTLY what you love. And do you have any idea how rare that is?

I don’t know about choosing this while I was still in diapers, but I do know that I ended up doing what I love. And I wouldn’t change a thing. (Holes in my gut and all…)

Auhor Interview + {GIVEAWAY!}: Samantha Young

Samantha Young

Samantha Young is a 25 year old writer who resides in her home county of Stirlingshire, Scotland. She is a self-proclaimed book addict and kindle junkie, using fantasy, dystopian, sci-fi and paranormal novels to feed her addiction.

After graduating from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in ancient and medieval history, Samantha returned to her main passion, writing, and often incorporates history and mythology into her novels.

Samantha's first release, The Tale of Lunarmorte trilogy, was followed by a second series titled Warriors of Ankh. At present, she is a full-time writer working on a number of projects for near future release. She is the author of eight novels and one novella. Her young adult paranormal series' are amazon bestselling novels.
Today I get to interview Samantha Young! You have no doubt seen her books before on other blogs, as they're very popular around the blogosphere. Enjoy the interview!

1.You’ve written several series of books in the span of only a few years, which is absolutely amazing. What’s your written schedule like? How quickly can you write the first draft of a novel?

I can write a first draft fairly quickly - between 4-6 weeks - as long as my planning is comprehensive, which it usually is. I find if I have all my character histories written and chapter summaries written out for the entire book that I can write up the first draft and only have proofreading and basic editing issues to deal with in the next drafts.

2. What is your biggest source of inspiration for your novels?

My biggest source of inspiration… I’d have to say it’s a mix between music and history. A line in a song or even the feel of a song, its concept, its story, can spark characters and dialogue. And history is a huge source of inspiration for me. I love pulling from real history and mythology and twisting it to fit my imagination and plots.

3. Do you like to write with an outline, or without one?

I definitely write with a very full outline. I’ve tried starting a book without a plan before and I just can’t work that way. The plot unraveled quickly and my characters ended up with personality disorders, contradicting themselves from one chapter to the next.

4. If you could be one of your characters, which one would you be and why?

If I could be any one of my characters I think I’d be Jaeden Rodriguez from the Lunarmorte books. She’s got her own really cool powers but without the massive responsibility that the heroine, Caia, has. Plus, I love Jae’s relationship with Ryder. They’re so fun together.

Now for the fun questions!

5. Imagine you worked for the circus. What is your act?

I love this question! I would be the ringmaster because in a way he’s a storyteller too. He guides the audience through the various acts and has a lot of creative control over how the show is produced. Plus… I love the tophat and coat tails!

6. If Hollywood made a movie about your life, what actress would you like to be casted to play you?

Oh wow… um… that’s a toughie. Right now I absolutely adore Zooey Deschanel. She’d have to wear colored contacts and she’s much prettier than I am but we have a similar quirky attitude and she can pull off sarcasm really well, which is kind of integral to playing me. I grew up in a sarcastic house. If you didn’t learn the art of irony you got bulldozed :-p

Thanks for having me on your blog!

Character Quiz + {GIVEAWAY!}: Beautifully Broken by Sherry Soule

Beautifully Broken by Sherry Soule
Pages: 328
Publisher: Moonlight Publishing
Genre: YA Paranormal
Buy It: Amazon | Barnes and Noble

Thirteenth daughter. Heritage witch. Demon slayer.

They say every town has its secrets, but that doesn’t even begin to describe Whispering Pines. The townsfolk are a superstitious lot and the mystical disappearance of a local teen has everyone murmuring about a centuries old witch’s curse.

Sixteen-year-old Shiloh Ravenwolf is a heritage witch from the Broussard family, a family both destined and cursed. When she takes a summer job at Ravenhurst Manor, she discovers a ghost with an agenda. That’s where she meets the new town hottie, Trent Donovan, and immediately becomes spellbound by his charms. Yet she is determined to discover the connection between them before it’s too late.

Finally, Shiloh's met someone who is supercute and totally into her, but Trent may be the next victim on the supernatural hit list. And Shiloh is the only person with the power to save him. Complicated much?

It sucks to have a destiny, especially since Shiloh would rather spend her summer being a normal girl who worries about clothes and boys, not the supernatural. But she’s never been
normal and the stranger things become the more her own magical senses awaken.

With cryptic messages from a pesky wraith, she will begin to understand the mysterious significance of the strange mark branded on her wrist, and decide how much she's willing to sacrifice to protect the other teenagers in town.

Unfortunately, for Shiloh, not all ghosts want help crossing over. Some want vengeance.
Take this a super fun quiz to see which character BEST suits YOU and score a Kindle version of the YA paranormal romance novel, BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN!

Are you a Shiloh or an Ariana?

Are you a quirky, romantic witch with supernatural powers? Or a snarky and outgoing blond with lots of vitality?

Well, they both love to read, have their own sense of style, and have big dreams for the future—but while they share those things, Shiloh’s tall, and Ariana’s not. Ariana’s got major curves and Shiloh’s super skinny. Ariana hearts Christina Aguilera and Shiloh’s all about the Foo Fighters.

Character Interview: The characters of Altered

Today, I have the immense pleasure of interviewing the characters of the novel Altered by Aubrey Coletti! They really are quite the interesting and colorful bunch, so enjoy!

Altered by Aubrey Coletti
Pages: 272
Genre: YA Thriller

When Toni, Joseph and Charlie arrive at their new boarding school, they are glad to leave their families — and respective problems — behind. Isolated as boarders, they meet a handsome senior with a personality like iced snake’s blood, teachers with a penchant for physical punishment, and four other outcasts who reveal that their being brought to the Academy wasn’t random at all. When the arrivals discover that their new school is engaged in “behavior modification” through electric shocks, isolation, restraints, and an ever-evolving set of methods to “fix” them, they declare war on their Academy. During their campaign of sabotage, they fight, hate, scorn, love, and begin to uncover the reasons why they were brought to the school. But as their war against the school escalates beyond their control, will they become the very things the Academy believes they are: dangerous, delinquent — and mad?
1.) Since there are quite a few of you guys, could you please do an introduction of yourself, and tell the readers a little about you?

Lieutenant: "Toni, why don't you start us off?"
Toni: "Okay. Uh, hello, I'm Toni White, I'm fourteen going on fifteen, sarcastic going on sardonic, and by virtue of just how fucked up everyone else here is, I'm actually the normal one."
Melvin: "It's sad but true. She really is. I guess I'm next to most normal. Hi, I'm Melvin. No I don't go by Mel, yes I am gay, yes I am wearing eyeliner, no I do not watch 'Glee', yes, I regret having fallen in with all these crazy Philistines around me."
Lieutenant: "You are such an over-the-top queen sometimes. I'm Amina Jackson, but everyone calls me Lieutenant, 'cause I do wanna join the army someday. If they all get to be too much for you I'm right here and I been there, best believe."
Joseph: "You gotta stop pretendin' you're so normal, don't lie to the nice lady. Ahem. Hello, I'm Joseph, I am in no way normal, no way, and I provide much needed comic relief."
Ann: "He's the clown of the ground."
Joseph: "Hey! She's so mean to me sometimes. And by sometimes I mean all the time."
Ann: "Oh, you like it. I'm Ann, I'm the resident bitch of the school-"
Lieutenant: "Town."
Ann: "Shush! You heard the rumors, they're all true, except the one where I have a Snoopy blanket. That one is totally false, all lies."
Anthony: "Okay, I'll just inject this in before ya'll drive the woman insane. I'm Anthony-"
Toni: "Or Anton, depending on what day you ask-"
Anthony: "Interrupting is rude, be a proper lady lil' Miss. I'm Anthony, I kinda jus' go along for the ride with all these crazy people."
Lieutenant (muttered): "Except when he's directing us. Charlie, hun, why don't you go?"
Charlie: "Oh, okay. My name is Charlie Persan, I'm fourteen, and no matter what these guys say, they really are wonderful people and friends."
Joseph: "Aw. That's so sweet." (Hugs Charlie)

2.) So, guys, I’ll just get right to it. What were your first thoughts when you realized that your school was… well, not your average boarding school when it comes to punishments?

Joseph (laughing): "Man, we're gonna in trouble for this!"
Lieutenant: "Like that would stop you. Mel, why don't you give her the background?"
Melvin (glares): "Call me that again and I'll do unspeakable things to you with your precious dog tags. Alright: so I've lived in this town all my life, and so I watched the whole school come in, how they did it, everything. The Headmistress, she didn't just say off the bat, 'Oh, we're going to skin shock your children', she's too smart for that. It was like the frog in the pot of boiling water, first she introduced some methods like restraining and isolation, then food deprivation, then worked her way up. 'Cause most of the kids stopped misbehaving once they realized she was serious, most parents didn't worry about it."
Anthony: "Until we came in, of course. We're all too stubborn and stupid to back down without a fight."
Lieutenant: "Yo, I'll be completely straight, I thought I was hallucinatin' for like a month when I found out what they were allowed to do to us here. The first time I got brought down to the lower levels and Discipline? Man...Took me a while to be able to form an opinion or whatever, 'cause I was just too stunned and shocked."
Anthony (Chuckling): "Yeah, literally! God Bless J. Alter High."
Toni: "Well, I'm glad you guys were here, or else I don't know what I would've done. When I found out they took my phone I went-I got so mad, I couldn't even believe it. I mean, you can't believe it for a minute there, it's not something you hear about, you don't think in the U.S. that they'd be able to legally do these things to you. But they can."
Charlie: "I was just so scared. Because I *did* know about places that shocked and restrained their students, so I knew it was legal, and I thought coming here was getting away from places like that. I just..."
Lieutenant (wrapping an arm around Charlie's shoulder): "It's okay, Tiny. We got you."
Joseph: "Well, you can probably guess how me and the Mrs. here reacted. I just can't even...express how wrong this place is. It just makes you instantly into a criminal, whether or not you've done somethin' wrong, and then if you do somethin' wrong, they feel justified in how they treat you. But it's like, how do they expect us to react?"
Ann: "Yeah, I mean, we're not perfect, but we're not monsters, we're not like *some* we could name who go around getting off on hurting people, but they treat us just like we are."
Lieutenant (nodding): "Truth."

3.) Some of you have some pretty interesting abilities. What can you do, and when did you first notice it?

Lieutenant: "That's the million dollar question, huh? I don't even know. I might have always been able to do the whole, fuck I'll just say it, telekinesis thing, but I only noticed it more recently, and I *still* don't know if it's real or just me going crazy. It's not like I'm Jean Grey or anything, just that if I get really...excited, or manic, and kinda push, it comes out. Not really that special."
Toni: "Don't believe a word she says. It's incredible, I've seen it."
Lieutenant (Waving her hand dismissively): "Yeah, yeah."
Joseph: "Well I knew about mine for a long time, but it wasn't until I got here that I started like, bein' able to control it. I just always was a little pyromaniac, and I figured, like, if fire shows up around me it's 'cause I'm always fuckin' around with matches, ya know? But I could never explain how fires would just start to happen when I was near, or get bigger, or how a room would get hotter when I would enter-you know, other than 'cause a' my masculine powers of attraction-until I came here and kinda started working on it. Don't have a clue how it happens though, I am not a science guy, so don't ask."
Ann: "It's gotta have somethin' to do with his own body temperature and how it heats up. His skin is literally burning sometimes, and even normally it's way hotter than a normal person's."
Joseph (Smirking) : "Thank you, babe. Glad to know how I affect you."
Ann: "Oh, not even what I meant."
Lieutenant: "Yeaaahhh, time out, uh uh, we do *not* need to go any more into that, no. Anthony?"
Anthony: "Huh? What about me? I don't have *powers*, I just got the fuckin' problem that any electrical thing I could near malfunctions or crashes or whatever. I can't even tell you how many games of Angry Birds I lost 'cause of it. Fuckin' birds. Someday man...someday those birds will pay."
Toni: "That leaves Charlie, I think."
Charlie (Taking a deep breath): "Yeah...my power, or...See, my thing is...Okay, sometimes I know things, or can sense things, mentally. A lot of times it's just watching people, their body language, subtle signs, voice inflections, emotions you can feel coming off them...but sometimes it gets almost..."
Ann: "You can say it, Funsize. You're psychic, it's nothing to be ashamed of."
Charlie: "It's not that I'm ashamed, I can just never *tell*! Sometimes I can get a sense of what people are thinking and feeling, in pictures, emotions, memories...because people don't usually think in words. Sometimes I know when people are near, or can hear things and smell things and sense things far away. But sometimes it's just...my mind playing tricks on me, me seeing, hallucinating, things that aren't there. So I'm not sure mine is really a *power*."
Ann: "Hey, at least you guys have something special. Don't turn your nose up at it, some of us would kill to have gifts and skills."
Lieutenant: "Oh, don't sell yourself short, Blondie. You know you got a whole *special* set of skills."
Ann: "Oh, don't *even* start."
Joseph (Wrapping his arms around Ann): "Yeah, leave my innocent little flower alone."
Melvin: "I personally believe I have the power to tell when a celebrity relationship will work or fail by the color coordination of their clothes, so, I think I am far more gifted than *all* of you."
Toni: "Oh, definitely."
Anthony: "We bow before your greatness."
Ann: "All hail the Faery Queen of J. Alter High."

4.) If you could be anywhere in the world right now, away from your school, where would you be, and what would you be doing?

Lieutenant: "Aw, damn, you just had to do that, huh? Fuck, I'd be...so many places. At a concert, at home, finishing up my junior year and getting ready to pick a college, in Paris or Budapest, or India...eating a whole goddamn pound of chocolate..."
Melvin: "Oh God, yes! Honestly, I'm not picky, just *anywhere* but here, and I'd be happy as a sparkling, rainbow clam."
Toni: "Home. I feel like Dorothy, I wanted so bad to leave, but no contact with my parents, and I just...you realize the problems you ran away from aren't as big as the problems you find when you're running, and you know it'd be better to face them."
Joseph: "Man, that was deeep. The Tao of Toni."
Ann: "You be quiet." (Puts a hand over his mouth) "Sad to say, I'd probably be somewhere with this guy, here. He's promised me a night on the town, or as close as he can manage."
Joseph (Pushing her hand away): "I would be very very far away from this angry, angry woman. Nah, just playin'. I'd be in my home town, New York, New York. New York City, no place like it."
Charlie: "I'd be anywhere but here, but as long as it was with you guys. No, honestly, I would. If there's one thing I *don't* regret about coming here, it's meeting all of you."
Anthony: "Awww...and that's how you know she's the really mad one. No, but we love her. Me? I'd be in Montana."
Lieutenant: "I will slap you if you if can't be serious for this nice interviewer."
Anthony: "I am! I like to ski!"
(Silence and stares from the other interviewees)
Anthony: "What? Brother can't ski? Oh, I just shock you all with how versatile I am. You don't know all my secrets!"
Charlie: "See? This is why I love them."

5.) They say music is the cure for anything. Do you guys have any artists that you listen to when you’re feeling crappy?

Charlie: "Oh Gods yes. I really like Fiona Apple, she really helps me when I can't seem to...find my way back from my head."
Toni: "Joni Mitchell is my favorite artist. She's got a song for everything, and it helps me to feel like me again to listen to her."
Lieutenant: "Shit, I like a lot of different artists. Right now I'm really into rock and metal. Jimmy Hendrix and Symphony X just have a song for like every headstate I get into. Oh, in answer to the last question, I'd want to go back in time to see Jimmy live."
Charlie: "I'll call you a Doctor, see if he can swing by with his TARDIS."
Toni: "Okay, nerd high five, right now." (High five)
Joseph: "I'm missin' home, so honestly a lot of people from New York. Jay-Z, Immortal Technique, Talib Kweli, Alicia Keys..."
Lieutenant: "Nice, we need to go to a concert together. Ya know, if we ever got outta here."
Ann: "I like country and I am not ashamed to say it. Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan, those are the people I'd put on my Ipod, if, ya know, we were allowed one."
Joseph: "Yo, which one has the song you like about loading up her gun and chasin' her ex-boyfriend around?"
Ann: "Miranda."
Lieutenant: "I can't even pretend to be shocked. Anthony?"
Anthony: "Honestly, the last thing I was able to listen to when I hacked into the school server and got internet was that damn "Bed Intruder" song, so now that shit's been stuck in my head all. fucking. week. Climbin' in yo windows...snatching yo people's up...tryna shock 'em so ya'll better hide yo kids, hide yo wives...and hide yo husbands, 'cause J. Alter is shockin' err'body out here."

6.) Thank you for joining me, guys! So fun to have you!

Toni: "Thanks for listening. I hope this gets to people out there, and you can spread our story so J. Alter and places like it get shut down. There's no regulations placed on what they can do here, so you wouldn't believe what they're allowed to do to us."
Joseph: "Yeah, thanks for gettin' the word out. Tell anybody else who gets a letter from this school to run all the way to fuckin' Canada if they have to to get away."
Charlie: "I hope this doesn't get back to the Headmistress here, but I do hope it warns people, because this isn't the only school, or residential treatment center, or 'camp' like this. Just don't let yourself be tricked into coming here, or sending your kids here."
Anthony: "Don't worry Tiny, we got your back. I'd say if this gets to anybody in a place like this, if you try to send out a message out online, or support, or whatever, whenever I can I hack into the Academy server, so I'll try and see it."
Melvin: "I guess our theme is, you're not alone."
Ann: "Not when you have friends."
Joseph: "Aww....tear. So movin'."
Toni: "Seriously though. The only way we live through this is with each other. So hold onto whoever your true friends are, because they're your real family."
Lieutenant: "Truth, best believe it."

Character Interview + {GIVEAWAY!}: Jasmine from Tamporlea by Tiffany Lovering

Tamporlea by Tiffany Loverling
Pages: E-book, so no pages
Genre: YA High Fantasy
Buy It: Amazon

During a camping trip, Jasmine Taylor is taken by a mysterious man, Orion, to a world she didn’t think would be possible to exist. Tamporlea is a beautiful world filled with magical Gypsies and unusual expectations of its inhabitants. However, she quickly faces betrayal within it’s walls and a war between the three Gypsy kingdoms. Jasmine must choose to either return home and forget Tamporlea‘s existence, or rule this mysterious kingdom as their Queen, but can she do everything that is expected of her?

Hello Jasmine! Welcome to my blog!

Thank you so much for having me! I've never done an interview before but now that Tiffany Lovering has put the story of Tamporlea out there for everyone to read, I'm getting more requests. Being Queen takes up a lot of time but when I saw your website, I couldn't say no to you.

For our interview today, we’re going to do something a little different. We’re going to play a game of word association. I’m going to say a word, and you just say whatever comes into your mind.

That sounds like fun!

Okeedokee, here we go!
Magic: That's what has kept Tamporlea running so smoothly for centuries. It's a very useful tool, but can also cause a lot of trouble for us. There was a sense of superiority that those with magic felt for so long, it was almost forgotten how important the Commoners (those without magic) are to Tamporlea. Magic comes in all types of forms here, but I think the true magic is the fact that when times are at their worst, we can all band together for the good of Tamporlea...at least for the most part.

Secret: Having a secret is a lot like lying in my opinion. Secrets have the potential to destroy relationships, families or even our entire society. Tamporlea has had to endure the effects a secret can have many times, but I think we are all learning that keeping secrets is never a good idea.

Love: This is the entire reason for Tamporlea's existence and continues to be the glue that keeps us together even in the worst of times. There are many types of love within our walls. Love of family, community, environment and history. It's the most beautiful kind of magic because everyone can both give and receive love and it has the potential of changing the world...I wish more people would remember that.

Mystery: It keeps life interesting, especially in Tamporlea. I can't say that I'm always happy with the effect a particular mystery has on the kingdom, but sometimes it can be fun. The people love riddling out a good mystery, and I think we all are a little frustrated (okay, A LOT frustrated) when something remains a mystery.

War: I was afraid this word would come up. War between kingdoms, and even within the kingdom is a very difficult time for everyone involved. While we are highly prepared now, we weren't when I first became Queen and we lost many people. I would love to say that there are better ways to handle difficult situations, but when those better ways are met with opposition, war is sometimes necessary.

Loss: I suffered the worst kind of loss when my father died and I couldn't imagine anything worse than that. Then, I came to Tamporlea and for the first couple years, we lost many people and I was devastated, I think we all were. We're such a close-knit community, every time we lose someone, it's like losing a mother, a father, a brother or a sister. It's never easy to lose someone in Tamporlea, but we honor each and every life within our walls both while living and after one's death.

Responsibility: Everyone in Tamporlea is responsible for something just to keep the kingdom running. We all take our jobs very seriously and if one person decides to not do their job, it hurts the whole kingdom. We all keep that in mind and put in our fair share of the work. As Queen it's my responsibility to make sure that everything is running smoothly. There have been many times that I have made decisions that people don't understand or that they really don't like, but I know I'm doing the right thing for the people of Tamporlea. With that being said, I also have to be sure that the people are happy, and make changes when necessary.

Royalty: The Queen has always been the most important role in Tamporlea, but it comes with a lot of responsibility. Every Queen that Tamporlea has had, has left their mark on the kingdom. Some marks are better than others, but there's a lasting impression. While I'm sure many would disagree with me, I don't see my position as Queen as being more important than any of the other tiers within the kingdom. I couldn't do my job at all without the support of everyone I oversee.

Happiness: Is so often taken for granted, not just in the kingdom, but in the real world as well. It's so important that everyone cherishes the times they are truly happy because things can change in an instant.
Thank you so much for inviting me to your blog. It’s been a lot of fun and I hope everyone has learned just a little more about my beautiful kingdom of Tamporlea.

Tiffany Online

Tiffany Lovering is a life-long upstate New York resident and spends most of her time devoted to her daughter, Allison’s activities. In between going to soccer practice, recitals, and spending way too much time on Facebook, she writes young adult fantasies and paranormal romance.

Tiffany has published many poems for small publications but Tamporlea is her first published novel. Tamporlea is the first book in the Tamporlea Trilogy which is to be followed by Unjust and Reunification. She was first inspired to write Tamporlea in January 2011 while going through photographs she had taken of landscapes around New England. One photo of a small mountain triggered her imagination and Tamporlea was born.

Although Tamporlea is the shortest book of the trilogy, it holds much of the history of Tamporlea as well as an introduction into the Gypsy lifestyle.

Tiffany has been writing short stories since the third grade and started writing full-length novels by the time she was sixteen. Keeping those works to herself, she never thought of the possibility of self-publishing. It was her daughter who inspired her to put Tamporlea out for the world to see.

Now, at 29, Tiffany plans to publish the rest of her Tamporlea Trilogy as well as some of her favorite works from the past and new adventures that come along everyday.

NOOK FOR SALE!

Hey guys!

So, my mom has a Nook that she literally never uses, and has never used, because she has an iPad. So, she decided to give it to me to sell on here to someone who would really appreciate it and use it.

It's a 1st generation e-ink Nook. It's very lightly used, and comes with the leather casing. It's been reset to factory settings, which means it's wiped clear of all my mom's books and ready for you to use it. Here are some pictures of it.

The leather casing

The Nook inside of it

The front view of the Nook

The back view

Nook with charger
The charger is a bit interesting, because my mom lost the original Nook wall charger, so she tried out a whole bunch of different ones and found that the Blackberry phone charger works perfectly. It charges it to 100% and it holds the charge.

We're selling it for $50, plus the cost of shipping it flat rate, which is $11.35 for US.

Author Interview + {GIVEAWAY!}: Jodi Lamm

Jodi Lamm
Author of: Titan Magic
Buy it: Amazon | Barnes and Noble

If you care to know the usual, I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. I currently live in the Sonoran Desert with The Other Lamm, three furry creatures (only one of which is an honorary dragon), and a variety of musical instruments. I write for the love of storytelling. I’m addicted to fantasy, ghost stories, and anything with just the right amount of eerie romance.

Jodi Online
1. Tell us about your novel Titan Magic in your own words. What does it mean to you?
J: To me, Titan Magic is about identity. All of its characters struggle to find their places in a tangled web of relationships. I think the most obvious example of this is Marcus and Maddy. They have no idea what they are to each other or what they mean to each other, and part of their story is their struggle to find out. Jas, in particular, hates what he is and the role he is expected to play. His entire story is about his futile attempts to change his identity.

2. Who was your favorite character to write about, and why?
J: My favorite character to write was probably Marcus, although Will is a close second. They were both so alive that writing them felt automatic. I knew any scene involving either of them would be a breeze to get through. They just made it so easy.

3. Have you always wanted to be an author?
J: Writing has been a bad habit of mine since I was a small child. My parents tried so hard to get me into a more social hobby, but it didn't work. I would stay up until way past my bedtime secretly writing my fantasies onto crumpled notebook paper until my hands hurt from it. I didn't aspire to share what I'd written until I became an adult. Writing, for me, was mostly a way to remember the stories I told myself.

4. Do you write with music, or without it?
J: It depends on my mood. I guess I'm fickle like that. Sometimes I must have silence. Sometimes I'll go crazy without music in the background. Sometimes I need music to get me through the more difficult bits—the unpleasant or overwhelming scenes. For the most part, I prefer instrumental music for writing, or at least music with which I am so familiar, the words won't get in the way.

Now we’re going to get fun. :)

YAY!

5. Look to the right of you, name the first thing you see. Add ‘woman’ behind the name of the item, and that’s your new super hero name. What is it, and what are your powers based on this name?
J: Library Book Woman. Umm… My superpower is the ability to know the contents of every library book I touch. Ohmygosh! That would be the coolest ability ever. Now I want it for real!

6. If you could switch bodies with 1 person in the entire world for a day, who would it be and why?
J: Does it have to be a person? I want to be uploaded into a computer so I can run mad and play with deadly neurotoxin. *grin* That's my post-Portal answer. Seriously, though, I think I would LOVE to be a bodiless consciousness. So I guess the best answer (assuming I have to follow the rules and pick a person) would be that I would switch bodies with someone who was ill or suffering. Then they could have a day with less pain, and I would better appreciate my own body when it came time to switch back.
