Back to School: Tips on Juggling School and Blogging

I know that most kids are either back in school, or are going back very soon. I myself am starting my junior year of high school in just a few days. I know that school and blogging are really difficult to handle at the same time. Last year, I literally lost a lot of sleep trying to make sure that the blog was updated with new content as often as possible, and looking back, I realize just how much needless trouble I put myself through. Late nights staying up until 1 AM when there was school the next day trying to finish a review is ridiculous. I'm writing this post so that any new bloggers can have a great school year, and blogging year at the same time, without becoming a sleep deprived zombie.

1. Be efficient. When you get home from school, give yourself a 10 or 15 minute break to relax and get comfortable, then start your homework. Trust me, don't put homework off for last. I did that many times, thinking "I'll just write this review, and then I'll start my homework." Do it the other way around. Get your homework done, and then guess what? You have the rest of the afternoon and night to work on that review without any stress. It works much better this way, and it's WAY less stressful.

2. Prioritize. So, you have a project to do that's due soon, and you also have a few posts to write. What do you do? Do the project. This goes hand in hand with being efficient, too. School comes first, always. I know you may feel guilty for not posting on your blog for a few days, but, look at it this way. What happens if you miss one day of posting? Nothing. But what happens if your project isn't ready the day it's due? You fail.

3. Take advantage of the weekend! The weekend is the perfect time to schedule posts for the upcoming week, so that way you won't have to worry about being whether you have something going up on the blog or not. And if you schedule at least a week of posts, that gives you time to leisurely schedule a few more posts for the next week, making your workload on the weekend smaller, and so forth. It's really a snow ball effect, and eventually you'll have a full 3 weeks completely scheduled with no effort at all.

4. Always make time for reading. In all the stress of keeping the blog up to date, a lot of bloggers skimp out on the most important part of book blogging--READING! I know with homework and projects and extra curricular activities it might seem like you won't have any time for reading, but trust me you can make time. Set aside 15 or 30 minutes before you go to bed to cuddle up with a book. ALWAYS have a book in your backpack to pull out whenever you finish a test early and you have a few minutes before you start your next assignment. A few pages read here and there adds up. There are always opportunities to read, you just have to find them.

5. Have fun. This is the most important part. Have fun! That's what blogging is supposed to be-- a fun thing to do for the love of reading. The moment blogging becomes 'work', you should probably step away from it for a few days and then come back refreshed, or else you'll just get burned out and you might end up making a decision that you'll regret later.

I hope I've helped in some way! School and blogging aren't difficult to manage at the same time if you just do it right, and not waste time on distractions and the internet that are fun, but ultimately don't get much done. (TWITTER, I AM LOOKING AT YOU)

Enjoy, and here's to a great new school year! :D
