Review: Shadowlander by Theresa Meyers

Shadowlander by Theresa Meyers
Pages: 105
Publisher: Entangled Publishing
Genre: Adult Paranormal Fantasy

Four sisters, three rules to live by, one big problem.

O'Connell Family Rule #1: Don't let the Fae know you see them.
O'Connell Family Rule #2: Don't talk to the Fae.
O'Connell Family Rule #3: Never, ever follow them.

Most people only believe what they can see. Gifted with the ability to see the deep, dark fae of Shadowland, Catherine Rowan Mary O'Connell would prefer not to. When the fae abduct her friend Maya, Cate breaks the sacred O'Connell Family Rules and sets a trap for the handsome fae who haunts her every step.

Rook, High Court Advisor to the Shadow King, has been following Cate since she was sixteen. When Cate reveals herself as one of the fabled "Seers", Rook is stunned—she is one of the few that can permanently open the gates between their worlds. If he turns her over to the Shadow King, his court will rule the human realm.

Cate knows she has precious little time to find Maya. By midnight, the glamour of Mid-Summer's Eve will fade, leaving her trapped forever in the Shadowland, but Maya's abductor won't give up the woman he's mesmerized easily.

The midnight hour is almost at hand. Cate must choose: her freedom or her destiny.
Shadowlander is the first adult novel I've ever accepted for review (not the first one I've read, though). It reminded me of an older, sexier version of Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr which is why I said yes. Honestly, it was even better than Wicked Lovely.

Shadowlander is a short novella, so I started and finished it all in an hour-and-a-half sitting. It's shortness had some pluses and minuses, the pros being that the pace was rapid-fire and the plot was constantly moving, the cons being that the relationship between Cate and Rook blossomed a little too quickly. Since Cate can see fey, she's been able to see Rook since she was 16--since he's been following her. So fourteen years later, I guess them finally being able to interact with each other was the culmination of 14 year's sexual tension and that's why they took to each other so quickly. But still, I would have liked to have seen more between them. More talking, more getting to know each other. More kissing is always nice too. :)

Cate and Rook were such a great couple. Cate was the stubborn heroine that, once she's set her mind to something, she can't be deterred. She could go toe to toe with Rook, and even if she wasn't his match in size in strength, she definitely was in intellect. Rook was... well, Rook was so decadently delicious! I mean, just look at him on the cover, he's smokin' hot and that's only a shadow! All throughout the novel, Cate and Rook are just barely resisting each other, and the tension it created nothing short of sexy. And since the story is told from the alternating perspectives of both of them, we get to see just how much they both want each other, which brings the steaminess up quite a few notches.

This is an adult novella, and there are scenes that really wouldn't be suitable for younger kids and early teens, so I recommend this to 16 years old and up.

I want more of it! It seems that this is going to be a series, so I'm very excited for it to continue. I need more Rook! Shadowlander is only $0.99 for Kindle, and it's such a quick read, so I highly suggest that if you're into some steamy and dreamy adult paranormal romance, read Shadowlander! You won't be disappointed! 4 out of 5 stars.

And I really enjoyed Wicked Lovely so an older, sexy, better version? Must. Read. This. I'm a sucker for some fey and a smexy romance :) Awesome review!
