Review: Tempting the Best Man by J. Lynn

Just a reminder, For the Older Crowd reviews are meant, well... for the older crowd. Books reviewed under this feature are NOT YA, and contain mature themes that may not be suitable for younger readers. If you're not comfortable with this, please don't read this review.

Publisher: Entangled Publishing
Genre: Adult Romance
#1 in Series
Madison Daniels has worshipped her brother's best friend since they were kids. Everyone thinks she and Chase Gamble would make the perfect couple, but there are two major flaws in their logic. 1) Chase has sworn off relationships of any kind, and 2) after blurring the line between friends and lovers for one night four years ago, they can't stop bickering.

Forced together for her brother's wedding getaway, Chase and Madison decide to call a truce for the happy couple. Except all bets are off when they're forced to shack up in a tacky 70’s honeymoon suite and survive a multitude of "accidents" as the family tries to prove their "spark" can be used than for more than fighting. That is, if they don't strangle each other first…

Yep. Basically.

Review: Call to Arms by Elle Casey

Call to Arms by Elle Casey
Pages: 275
Publisher: Self-published
Genre: YA Urban Fantasy
#2 in Series
Follow Jayne Sparks, the (still) potty-mouthed seventeen-year-old and newly changed elemental fae and her friends - an incubus, a daemon, a green elf, a water sprite and a pixie - as they struggle to find their places in the Light Fae community of the Green Forest and prepare for the upcoming battle against the Dark Fae.
Quick Thoughts & Review of the 1st Book

Read my review of the first book, The Changelings!

Absolutely loved this second installment to the series! I didn't think Jayne and her friends could get any funnier, but they did!

Review

The first thing I have to say about this series, and Elle Casey in general, is that it--and she--is one of my favorites simply because of how hilarious it is. Seriously, Jayne in my kind of girl. I can see the two of us hanging out. She is such a smart mouth, and she can cook up quite a sarcasm soup in any situation, no matter who she's talking to. She is one sassy girl.
The overall plot of the series is starting to take form in this book, which I'm excited for. In The Changelings, the scene was still being set, and when the book ended, more questions were posed than were answered. Now that Jayne and co. are actually living with the fae, they're learning the secrets of the trade, even if not everyone is completely truthful or particularly forthcoming with them. Jayne learns some things about her particular brand of faerie, such as exactly what she can do and what elements she has an affinity for. Some other things are mentioned about another fae that's similar to Jayne, only the inverse of her powers, which I know will become a massive plot point in the future.

I like how the other characters grew in this book. Chase--oh I love Chase! I admit to having a crush on him, and I sincerely hope that Jayne gets some Chase loving because he's just so perfect and cute. Love him! There's also a new addition to the group: Tim the Pixie! OHMYGOD, I absolutely adored Tim! He was just as hilarious and spunky as Jayne, BUT IN A TWO-INCH TALL GREEN PACKAGE. How adorable is that?

I do have to say that I'm not particularly a fan of how Elle Casey chose to end this book. As with the first one, she ended it right in the middle of a crucial scene, but it doesn't come off as a cliffhanger this time. These books actually continue on exactly where the previous one left off (I've read the beginning of the 3rd book, so the continuity is the same) and I'd much rather that Elle simply closed of the action for each book and then started up fresh in the next. That would, firstly, give us readers some closure upon finishing, and secondly, give us, and the characters, some time for a break.

4.5 out of 5 stars

Who Should Read This Book?

Fans of the first book should absolutely continue on with this one. It's got the perfect blend of a contemporary and believable teenage cast of characters, with some really intricate and deep-rooted fae mythology.

Review: Entwined by Heather Dixon

Entwined by Heather Dixon
Pages: 472
Publisher: Greenwillow Books
Genre: YA Fairy Tale Retelling
Azalea and her younger sisters dance in the mysterious silver forest every night, escaping from the sadness of the palace and their father’s grief. What they don’t understand—although as time passes they begin to get an inkling of the danger they are in—is that the mysterious and dashing Keeper is tightening his snare with deadly purpose. Luckily, Azalea is brave and steadfast. Luckily, a handsome young army captain also has his eye on Azalea. . .
Review

Let me just start this review off by saying that the cover and description of Entwined gives you one impression, but the book is actually completely different than what you would think. When I first picked it up, I was expecting this epic high fantasy romance, and that's just not what Entwined is about. It did not fall short of my expectations, it just changed them.

As it turns out, Entwined isn't so much about the romantic love as it is about family love. Going into this, I didn't know this was a retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses fairy tale, so it was only after when I started reading some other reviews of it that I found out. That being said, looking back, I think Heather Dixon did an amazing job retelling the story. She took the basic structure of it and gave it a different life, adding her own story around the bones of the fairy tale.

I thought the sisters were hilarious! There were 12 of them, and with so many characters it's easy to lose track of who they are, but each of the sisters has her own distinct personality that I didn't get them confused once. One is stubborn, one is shy, one is clumsy, one is romantic, the list goes on! They all had these weird, yet lovely names, so I don't quite remember them right now, but as you're reading, you should. Azalea, the main sister, is the oldest, and she basically takes on the mother figure after their mother dies.

Even though the romance wasn't prominent, it was still there lightly drizzled throughout the story. There were actually quite a few romances, and I found myself rooting for them all. The unique personalities of each sister made this that much more fun, because they found men that complimented them. There was even a surprise romance that I did not see coming at all!

Let me just say, the highlight of this book was the villain, Keeper. More like Creeper! Man, he was sooo creepy! I got goosebumps in the scenes that he was in. He would watch the girls as they danced, and just... ugh. But, I have to applaud Heather Dixon for being able to make a character so creepy that he was able to illicit such a reaction from me.

4 out of 5 stars
Who Should Read This Book?

Fans of the 12 dancing princesses fairy tale should absolutely pick this one up! And definitely any one who is a fan of fantasy. Not so much romance fans, but the romance is there.

Discussion: The Nice Guy that Is Under-Appreciated

How many sides are in a triangle?

Think about it for a moment. Just take your time, it's okay.

Got an answer? Well, if you answered 3, then DING DING DING! We have a winner!

In YA, there's a pretty basic formula that most authors use when constructing their love triangles. There's the girl, usually the female protagonist, that has feelings for two boys. And, in order to make the decision of who she will choose that much more intriguing, these two boys are most usually polar opposites. You have the bad boy, which I've already dedicated a post to (with the most delicious and ab-tastic pictures and gifs)--and then there's the nice guy.

In my experience reading YA, most of the time the bad boy will get the girl. Most of the time.
However, it's usually not always so easy and clean as that. Because of the love and affection that this leading lady bestows upon his cold heart, he usually undergoes a personality change and becomes a bit softer. But the leather jacket stays. Don't mess with the leather jacket.

But, in this post, I'd like to appreciate the third end of the triangle that barely gets any love.

THE NICE GUY
You see, the nice guy is the one that does all the things that the bad boy won't. Hold open doors for the protagonist, pull out her chair for her when she goes to sit, listen to her when she needs him, offer a shoulder to cry on, kiss her softly and sweetly, tell her she looks beautiful when she really looks like shit like a mess, buy her tampons if the need should arise, deal with her raging PMS mood swings, and go see chick-flicks with her even though he just wants to make out in the dark movie theatre.

Yeah, he's that nice.

Also, bad boys have a tendency to smirk, while nice guys smile like this:
Also, like this:
And, like this:
(Shameless Avengers cast spam)
The more I think about it, the more I rethink my stance on who I want to win in the love triangles. I'm firmly becoming Team Nice Guy.

But, since us girls are gluttons for punishment, we like to choose the ones that slam us against walls when they want to rip our panties off, and flirt with other girls just because they can. Yep. We're smart.

Still, I'd like to highlight some nice guys that did win over the girl, whether they had competition or not. If you want some nice guy action, check out these dudes.

Sam from Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater
Okay, he didn't actually have to fight anyone to get Grace, because they were just the most adorable couple right from the start. But the point is, that he's a great example of a nice guy getting the girl in general. I'd love to have a boyfriend like Sam

Sonny from Wondrous Strange by Lesley Livingston
In the first book there didn't seem to be a love triangle, but it popped up slowly. And while I kinda was on the other guy's team (who, by the way, would constitute a bad boy, I suppose) Sonny was still the only guy for Kelley. There really was just no getting around it. So, I'm really glad that he got the girl.

Adam from Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
Well, currently at least. The series isn't over yet. And Adam's opponent, Warner is definitely a bad boy. Actually, he's more like psychotic homicidal boy. But, through all this insanity, Adam still manages to hold onto his sweet side, and you know he really loved Juliette.

Griffin from The Girl in the Steel Corset by Kady Cross
This is one of those extremely rare cases where I LOVE BOTH MEN IN THE LOVE TRIANGLE. Both Jack Dandy, the bad boy, and Griffin King, the nice guy. I would be happy if Finley ended up with either one of them, it doesn't even matter. But for right now, it seems that Griffin has the upper hand. Nothing is settled, but he's on top at the moment.

Tucker from Unearthly by Cynthia Hand
TEAM TUCK FOR THE WIN!
Seriously, as much as I love Christian, I do not want him to win. I am sooooo adamantly Team Tucker because he's just that all around amazing gentleman with an adorable southern drawl type-thing. (He's not really southern, so...)

Lend from Paranormalcy by Kirsten White
In this case, I'm actually not team Lend, but, for the purposes of this post, he gets a spot. I like Lend, he's really sweet and hilarious too! Him and Evie do make a cute couple.

3rd Blogoversary! And Giveaway!

Happy Blogoversary to me!

Yes, it's my 3rd blogoversary. Actually it was June 28th, but I was on hiatus then, so I'll celebrate now.

I love this blog, so very much. When I started it, I actually had no idea what I was doing, or where I wanted it to go. Three years later, I find myself just as lost, and yet I love it. This blog is just something that makes me happy to do, and somewhere along the lines I lost track of that. Taking this month long hiatus has really helped me come back to myself blogging-wise, and has reminded me why I started this blog.

Because I freaking love books.

So I'm going to talk about them.

I usually don't make big deals about blogoversaries, but to say thank you to all of my followers, I'm giving away ten envelopes with swag in them. They're already pre-packaged, with lots of fun goodies!
There are 10 of them! So 10 winners!

To enter, just leave a comment below saying why you love YA, or if you're a blogger, why you love blogging. Remember to leave your email!

In which I take a blogging summer vacation:

Hey guys.

If you saw my previous post about how I just haven't felt the compulsion to blog lately, you'll know that my blogging mojo is not at its best right now. For that reason, I've decided to give myself my own blogging summer vacation.

I'm taking all of June off from blogging, and will return July 1st.

I'm taking this time to refresh myself, and just not let the insanity of blogging take over my vacation. I'm going to spend it reading, because I've set myself a 50 book goal for this summer, and so far I've only read 1. I'm lagging far behind, and I want to have time to just read and not feel guilty that I'm not scheduling posts.

So, there you have it. I will return,  my lovelies, I promise. And I'm experimenting with finding my own voice right now. We'll see how it goes.

Until July! xoxoxoxoxox

To blog, or not to blog? That is the question...

I've written this post a thousand times, and I've deleted it a thousand and one. But, I'm just going to say it now.

I've lost the will to blog.

Well, that's actually not very accurate. I want to blog, so much, I have all these post ideas and everything is written neatly down in my planner, and it's all ready for me. But every time I sit down to get things done.... I open the post, stare at it for a few seconds, then close it again. I may write like 5 words, but the end result is always the same.

I have no idea what's gotten into me. I guess it really started when I was taking my final exams 2 weeks ago, and I just stopped blogging because I knew I wouldn't have enough time. But I kept telling myself "I'll get back to it when summer starts." And... I haven't.

I've also been in an enormous reading slump. I haven't read a word in weeks.

This is really troubling to me, because I love this blog. I've put so much effort into it, since I first started it 3 years ago, and I just don't want to see all of that go down the drain.

I don't know what to do. I've tried just staying away from blogging for a while, letting myself rest and rejuvenate, but that hasn't helped. I'm thinking that the only thing to do is just sit down and blog. Exert some self control and actually get things done.

Thoughts? I'd love some advice. Anything, everything.

TBR Showcase (3)

These are some of the books on my TBR pile that I plan on reading this summer.
Books:
Jealousy by Lili St. Crow
Defiance by Lili St. Crow
Hallowed by Cynthia Hand
Dreaming Awake by Gwen Hayes

Have you read any of those books? What did you think? Which ones should I move to the top of my list?

Review

HOLY DEAR SWEET DIETY OF YOUR CHOOSING.
This book
was
amazing.
If you read and loved the first one, then you won't be disappointed by The Girl in the Clockwork Collar. This book is quite different, in that it takes place in New York instead of London. Jasper has been kidnapped by a former associate of his, Reno Dalton. Now, we all know Jasper is pretty bad ass, so he shouldn't have a problem getting out of this situation, right? Except Dalton has something--or someone on Jasper. Mei Xing, the woman that Jasper loves. Now Jasper is at Dalton's beck and call, because Mei has a clockwork collar around her neck that will tighten and strangle her if Jasper even so much as breaths the wrong way. It's up to the gang to save him, and they hasten their way from England to come and find him.

Let me just start by saying my respect and admiration for Finley grew a thousand fold in this book. We all knew she was pretty kick ass and a total English ninja, but in this book her two halves have come together now. She's not so Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde anymore. Now Finley can control her strength, and she puts it to good use. In order to save Jasper, she infiltrates Dalton's gang by literally beating the crap out of ever tough guy that underestimates her in a fighting club. He's impressed by her, and asks her to join his crew. I just love strong heroines, so to see one as strong as Finley kicking some butt, and not needing to be saved by anyone else, is gratifying. I seriously applaud Kady Cross for making Finley into the character she is.
Although my greatest love in this series is still Jack Dandy, whom I regret to say was not in this book at all, I do have lots of love for Griffin. He's also pretty amazing, and what I love is, while he is ultimately a gentleman and a great guy, he also has a darker, more seductive streak in him. He's got some pretty cool powers of his own, which actually get him into lethal trouble quite a bit. Fans of Griffin's and Finley's romance can finally breathe a sigh of relief at the end of this book, although, trust me, it's only the beginning of them together. And it's a very long and frustrating path to get there.

There is some crazy stuff going on in this book!
It all revolves around Dalton and what he's planning, but there's some new steampunk technology that the gang is dealing with, as well as some other really spooky stuff that I think will be dealt with later on in the series (there are going to be 5 books in total!). The plot was fast paced, and there was always something going on. What I love is that Kady Cross doesn't give everything away immediately. There are pieces of a puzzle that need to be put together, and those pieces are given to you bit by bit.

Also, let me just say that I actually really loved Dalton, in a weird, he's evil but still hot kind of way. I'm a sucker for bad boys, and Dalton is just an unapologetically bad boy. There wasn't anything actually going on between him and Finley, it's all just a ruse to save Jasper, but still, a part of me wished there was.

Who Should Read This Book?

Calling all fans of any of the following genres:
  • Steampunk
  • Historical
  • Romance
  • Action
  • Adventure
  • Mystery
Yes, it's that versatile.

Memorable Quotes

"Word is Dalton likes rough girls."
* * *
"Don't you dare die. You have to live so I can curse you up and down for scaring me like this."

"The two of you are like a twister colliding with a mountain."
