But it still feels a bit blasphemous as a book blogger to say that I regret some book purchases I made a long time ago, which is reflected in the fact that these books are still sitting on my TBR pile 3, maybe 4 years later. To preface why this post is being written, I was organizing my TBR pile and came across several books that I know I have zero interest in reading, and I stopped and racked my brain for the reason I had purchased them in the first place. Honestly, I couldn't come up with one. The covers don't particularly strike me as anything special and the descriptions aren't that engrossing either. All I know is that I bought these books years ago and I don't want to read them.
I think the reason for having these books is that when I was at the height of my blogging craze I went a little insane with buying books, just grabbing whatever I could get my hands on so I'd have something to read. This totally came back to bite me in the butt because then I ended up with too many books, and I'd continually avoid the ones I don't have a pull to read. So they continue to sit there. I do feel incredibly guilty about it, because at that age I wasn't the one buying the books, my mom was. So even now I feel guilty about having made her spend all that money on those books and not even reading them. Perhaps I can talk myself into giving them a try sometime soon.
Obviously now that I'm in charge of my money I'm certainly more aware of the books I buy and have to be more selective, so while I can't always be right about whether I'll like a book or not after reading it I still make sure to only buy books I'm 100% interested in reading. I just wish I had been a bit more selective when I was younger.

There are so many I snagged up when I first started blogging when I was really into YA. I would periodically buy several bargain books on Amazon or Barnes & Noble, just picking out intriguing ones or ones on my TBR. Most of those never got read. And then with my Nook, I downloaded so many books because it was so exciting to be able to read books for 99 cents or $2.99. I'd say that probably 10% of the books on my Nook, I have no interest in reading anymore--and they're all the ones I downloaded when I first got it! Lol. My reading tastes have changed a lot over the years, I swing more toward NA than YA, so a lot of the YA stuff doesn't appeal like it used to. But, maybe someday they'll interest me again, you never know!
ReplyDeleteSame about the Nook thing! I have a Nook and Kindle, and most of the books on both just don't interest me. Which sucks! That's true, I know as I've gotten older I'm much pickier when I choose books to read. I realized how precious my time is (because i never freaking have any) so I want to spend it reading quality stuff.
DeleteI definitely have books that I regret buying on my shelf. My TBR is constantly growing instead of diminishing. I think my biggest problem is that when I go to book festivals or book sales and see tons of super cheap books, I buy them even if they just look "okay" instead of buying books that I know I really want to read. It results in me selling a lot of my books to the used section in the local bookshop. I just wish I learned to buy books I really want to read, because that would open up tons of room on my TBR shelf!

DeleteI have a lot that I have bought that I totally regret, a lot are third and fourth books of series that have just totally gone downhill. These days I try and be very careful! Great post!

DeleteYep! I have books I wish I hadn't spent the money on, and some that I got for free that I regret getting! At festivals or book signings, sometimes I buy books just because the author is there, and I figure I better get it now while I can get it signed! Lol! So, yeah, all the time! ;)

DeleteI tend to borrow books more than I buy - and for the exact reason you've posted about. Even then, there are several books on my bookshelf that I haven't opened in more than 2 years and I don't know if I'll ever get around to them. My TBR is getting out of control. XD
